Causal Chain

Explore linked KPI drivers in Causal Chain, edit the graph layout, and add new KPI nodes while editing.

Updated August 13, 2026

Causal Chain shows how related KPIs move together so you can see which drivers pushed a metric — not just that it moved.

Edit the chain

  1. Open Causal Chain for a dashboard.
  2. Click the pencil icon in the header to enter edit mode.
  3. Drag nodes to rearrange layout, connect nodes to propose edges, or remove edges.
  4. Click Save to persist layout and edge changes, or Cancel to discard those edits.

What Cancel does

Cancel reverts unsaved layout and edge edits. Nodes you add with Add Node are created on the server immediately and stay on the chain after Cancel.

Add a node

While in edit mode, use Add Node next to Save and Cancel. The form is the same Query Configuration form used to edit a KPI template query — including template SQL, datasource, schema, and date columns.

Required fields:

  • KPI Name — display name on the node
  • Template Query — SQL used for historical values
  • Database Type — used for cadence/date replacement
  • Datasource — where the query runs

Optionally link a dashboard Widget with the same searchable picker as Copy filters (search + scroll load). The selected widget UUID is sent as card_id.

After create, the new node is added to the canvas locally (no chain reload) so you can connect it to other KPIs.
