How to read Indian-format numbers
Indian English uses a 2-2-3 digit-grouping pattern. Reading from the right, the first three digits stay together, then digits are grouped in pairs. So one crore becomes 1,00,00,000 not 10,000,000. The grouping reflects the underlying word system: lakh (105), crore (107), arab (109), kharab (1011). Most software defaults to international grouping; finance, real-estate, salary, and government communications in India consistently use the Indian grouping.
Quick conversion rules
- 1 Lakh = 100,000 = 0.1 Million
- 1 Crore = 100 Lakhs = 10 Million
- 10 Crores = 100 Million
- 100 Crores = 1 Billion
